Keep the equipment limit and the connection requirement apart

A tong catalogue and a connection document answer different purchasing questions. The first describes the offered machine. The second is needed to establish the requirement for the named connection. Copying a tong capacity into a connection requirement column makes the worksheet look populated without supplying the missing connection evidence.

This guide is a desk-review method. It provides no torque setting, hydraulic adjustment, make-up sequence or acceptance procedure for a tubular connection.

Evidence boundary

The Strong TQ table gives the TQ178-16 a pipe-diameter range of 101.6 to 178 mm and a low-gear maximum torque of 16 kN.m. These entries belong to that column, not adjacent variants. Jaw configuration and calibration conditions remain unresolved; the torque entry is not a connection make-up instruction.

Fictional comparison: the missing connection document

This scenario is fictional. Comparison T-A and clarification T-B are invented records, not actual supplier offers. No connection torque is assumed.

T-A identifies a tong model and repeats its low-gear capacity in a field headed required make-up torque. The tubular description gives a nominal size but no controlled connection designation or document revision. T-B identifies the connection document as missing and keeps the required-torque field blank. Both records refer to the same equipment attachment.

A reviewer can resolve the documentary error without calculating anything. Move the machine entry to the offered-capacity column, retain its gear label, and flag the connection requirement as unresolved. The move corrects the comparison sheet; it does not establish whether the tong is suitable.

Traceability questionEvidence needed in the bid fileUnsupported substitute
Which machine is offered?Exact model and matching table columnA neighboring model's data
Which grip configuration is included?Offered jaw or die configurationNominal pipe size alone
What connection is being made?Controlled connection identity and applicable documentA general tubular description
What supports the comparison?Documented machine capability and connection requirementThe machine maximum copied into both columns

The fictional T-B is more explicit about the missing document, but that does not make it an accepted offer. Its blank field still requires resolution.

Resolve variants before normalizing units

A suffix, gear label or equipment boundary belongs to the value. Before making a common-unit spreadsheet, verify that the model on the quotation, the catalogue column and the equipment schedule are the same. Record any proposed substitution as a separate comparison, rather than letting similar names share one row.

The unit converter can help present an already identified torque quantity in a common unit. It cannot supply a connection requirement, demonstrate calibration or decide the necessary machine capacity. Preserve the original value and unit beside any presentation conversion.

Ask for a configuration-level reply

The useful clarification asks the bidder to identify the tong, backup arrangement, gripping configuration and included measurement documentation. Ask the project team for the controlled connection reference and the requirements that the offer must address. Each answer should point to a document, not simply repeat suitable.

Keep exclusions visible. A standalone tong description should not silently become evidence for a complete handling assembly. Likewise, an equipment quotation does not establish the connection manufacturer's instructions.

The power-tong product reference collects the catalogue entries. Carry the unresolved connection reference and offered configuration into the RFQ Builder. The output is a request for documentary alignment, not permission to make up a connection.
